Online Training and Workshops

Doug Keller has been teaching workshops and trainings in the therapeutic applications of yoga for more than 16 years, and is known not only for his effectiveness in communicating this ever-evolving approach in these trainings, but also for his extensive writing on the topic in magazines, journals and his two-volume work on ‘Yoga As Therapy.’ He has also served, in addition to his traveling and teaching, as a Distinguished Professor at the Maryland University of Integrative Health in their Master’s Degree program in Yoga Therapy. This program is state-approved and accredited for granting a Master’s degree in this field, and is fully accredited by the International Association of Yoga Therapists.

We are thrilled to present this training in some fundamentals that illuminate the therapeutic wisdom of yoga.

The online experience carries some special advantages because of its format.
ALL those who register will receive recordings to download permanently and watch at your own time.  This includes the lectures in high quality video with the course notes in hand; and asana practices.

This gives you even more content and learning than is normally possible in a live training, and in a way that is practical and not overwhelming — or exhausting!

Schedule for each day:

Discussion Session
We will meet for our live session via zoom to dive deeper into our training topic introduced in our asana practice. Questions can be asked through the chat function during the lecture, and there will also be time for live question and answer at the end of each session.

All Levels Asana Practice
After each live session, and a short break, we will do an all-levels practice that includes some of the new techniques.

Workshop Descriptions

  • Saturday: Opening the Wings of the Breath - Keys to Freeing the Shoulders and Opening the Body to the Breath - 3 hours

The freedom of the shoulder blades provides a neglected key to both pain-free shoulders and expanded capacity for the breath.

In the first part - 1½ hours - we’ll explore the movement of the shoulders and shoulder blades, with attention to sources of pain from the ‘arthrokinetic reflex’ that can inhibit the shoulders, as well as the role of the muscles controlling the shoulder blades in the breath.

After a short break, we will do an all-levels practice which includes some new techniques for working with the shoulders and neck, finishing with some breath work and relaxation.

You can, if you wish, choose to take just one of the two sessions, or both

  • Sunday: The True Core: Strengthening, Lengthening and Centering - 3 hours

What we most often call the ‘Core’ is actually just the container for the Core. There is a center of feeling and intelligence from the arches of the feet, through the psoas, pelvic floor, diaphragm, and neck that is awakened and enlivened by backbending. This is a myofascial line that is the thread that runs through our core.

Doug will introduce a new perspective on the feet, one which gives a grounding and focus for the practice, connecting it to the fullness of this thread through the body — and the benefits of this awareness for the body and breath.  From the basis of a new perspective on the actions of the feet, we’ll follow the myofascial threads from the feet up through the knees, hips and low back — providing a refreshed perspective on the principles of action and alignment made popular by Anusara, but rooted in other alignment traditions as well.

This 1 ½ hour introduction into accessible, experiential ideas will lead into a 1 ½ hour all-levels practice, with emphasis on manageable (and not overly deep) backbends — experiencing how the center releases and opens when we don’t ‘push.’

  • Friday: Yoga Reconsidered - 2 hours

Tantric forms of practice offered more accessible forms of practice, with a range of tools to use, as well as a reconsideration of how to understand and explore the depths of meditation. This session will start with a look at the key insights that transformed our relationship to yoga practice and meditation in particular - offering a view that is an alternative to the idea of the 'Koshas', and then we'll do various practices of the 'vinyasa' of breath awareness that takes us through the deeper levels of awareness they described.

This session will be a total of 2 hours, with meditation and breath practices, and deep relaxation at the end
