Raga & Kirtan Concert
with Shantikar
Thursday, September 19 | 7:00pm

Shantikar is a unique performance ensemble that creates sacred music rooted in the ancient traditions of India. Their repertoire includes Indian classical ragas, kirtan and world music offerings that range from serene meditation to uplifting celebration.

The band is led by Richard Russell, a long-time disciple of world-renowned Indian master musician Ali Akbar Khan.  Richard is the lead singer and plays the 25-string sarode, accompanied on harmonium and response vocals by Alice Zimmermann, a classically trained musician who has pursued a life-long passion in devotional music.

The heartbeat of the ensemble is the powerful combination of Anil Prasad on tabla and Dennis Staskowski on bass, two Seattle greats who are rhythmic masters in a wide variety of world music styles.

The captivating music of Shantikar invites the listener to explore spiritual realms both traditional and personal through call and response chant, creative movement and inner contemplation.
